While the other fights were drawing close, Yumiko was busy painting the floor red. She wasn’t even breathing anymore. Quietly the weak heart knocked in her chest. Its rhythm was slow, but still there. The only thing pulling her back from the eternal sleep was a particularly stubborn strand of life force. A thread without a needle, it slowly stitched the wounded woman’s body back together, staunching the flow of crimson.

However, the cruel criminal was not done yet. He loomed over the downed Marine with a glint of madness in his gaze. “Scum.” He spat on her. “You are not even worth dulling my blade.” He underlined the insult with a swift kick to the ribs.

Slowly, gently, the red stain spread. The furious foe lifted his sandal. An ugly vein throbbed on his forehead. “Tch, look at what you did!” Another kick cracked something. “You sullied my favorite socks, you worthless sack of shit!” Reminiscent of a child throwing a tantrum, he stomped on the lifeless body.

Yumiko’s saving grace was, perhaps, the fact that his foe clearly was no martial artist. His fuming and flailing lacked the kind of power needed to finish off a stubborn Zoan. If only she could regain her consciousness before the violent man took back his decision about the blade...

With few steps taken back after his final punch, Ryoichi looked down on Hawkins. The man remained to growl, still rocking his hybrid form. It went as he had expected. Hawkins finally listened to his words. He stayed down. Good. It was finally a time to take steps away from the fight, only to see Yumiko down on the ground, beaten, still being beaten by the no-good pretty boy.

"Some gentleman you are..". Stomp, stomp, Ryoichi took slow steps towards the no-good pretty boy. The approach was stopped by a knife into the shoulder... Into Ryoichi's right shoulder. The sharp teeth gritted. The sharp blade dug into him, painting the shoulder areas white fur red.

The eyes shifted towards the direction where the blade came from... Of course. Weirdly, he wasn't even surprised. Once a tradition breaker, always a tradition breaker. Hawkins had recollected himself up onto his feet. "Time to die. You'll make a perfect carpet!". The already beat-up man took this as a chance and began to approach to attack the injured man-bear.

It was hard to move the right arm, but, suppose that made the fight fair. A punch thrown, a kick flown, Ryoichi managed to dodge it all. His arm was injured, but not the rest of his body, nor his will. Hawkins on the other hand was using the last of his fumes. A wise man would have stayed down... But it's possible that Ryoichi beat that last wisdom out of him.

Swiftly, Ryoichi took this moment to get behind Hawkins. "Let this be the day... When the mighty champion Hawkins got beaten by Ryoichi who used just, his left hand.". A quick sequence of left-hand jab, a jab then stronger than that! A swift left hook!. Hawkins's turned head rocked like a bobblehead at each and every punch thrown. A cherry on top was the swift and strong left uppercut, crushing into the man's jaw, sending him flying up and forward.

Flying Hawkins's next destination....... Pretty boy Samurai!

Steel crashed against steel as the Marquise de Aviar, lost I a rage fueled frenzy, thrust and swung with his sword over and over again. On his own end, Anton was matching him strike for strike, knocking his sword back in a clash of sparks. It was hard to tell who was more impressive, Anton for his keen defense, or the Marquise for keeping up with a man with four arms.

However, despite the intense fury driving him, the damage and fatigue the Marquise sustained could not be ignored. After knocking his blade aside, Anton lept back, before lashing out with a kick. It seemed like Anton had put too much distance between the two for the kick to connect, but the burst of compressed air from Anton's foot begged to differ. Caught off guard, the Marquise was knocked back into the air.

But the Marquise wasn't done yet. Twisting himself in the air, he seemed to kick himself off of the very air itself, shooting towards Anton, determined to deliver a critical blow. But the grasshopper marine was faster, swinging all three blades at one to generate an almost star shaped blade of air, flying right at the owl zoan.

The two attacks crashed in the air, and it seemed like, for a moment, the Marquise was holding his own. But alas, it was not to be. With a sharp crack, the Marquise's blade snapped, and Anton's attack crashed into him. With one last cry, the Marquise was sent flying back, disappearing over the rooftops.

Anton prepared to leap after him, to make sure his opponent was really down, when something caught his eye. His second in command, Yumiko, was down, bleeding out as her insufferable opponent kicked at her.

The Marquise can wait. Anton shot off towards the unnamed swordsman.

The man's day was about to get so much worse. On one side, his own cohort was flying at him. On the other was a justifiably Anton. You'd almost feel bad for him if they hadn't come here to murder a child.

Pain. Like a hammer, its dull thumping knocked at the walls of Yumiko’s dreamless sleep. Resembling sparks scorching hot, it surged through her body with each thump. She couldn’t grasp the details, such as where and why, but it pierced the veil regardless. Her fingers twitched weakly. Sharp, shallow breaths began to heave her back.

Then...

It stopped.

There was a thump far bigger and heavier than the others, but it carried no pain with it. Hm, well, not for the samurai anyhow... Without the sparks to light the darkness in her head, she drifted back into lifeless slumber. Her breathing, however, remained. Weak. Unsteady, but still there. So stubborn was the willpower keeping her clinging to life.

Meanwhile, back in reality, the mysterious -and frankly violent- samurai received an unpleasant surprise. His so-called ally was making a mess of everything. Again. Okay, fine, maybe that wasn’t much of a surprise. Rather, it was the delivery method of the bad news that caught him off-guard. It all came crashing down on him.

Literally.

With a thump and a tumble, the big boxer landed on top of the surly swordsman. “Geho-!” His ranting was cut thankfully brief, as the air was driven out of his lungs. Both criminals skidded along the floor, painting an avant garde streak of crimson along it. Oh, it would be fine. It wasn’t their blood after all.

The mysterious samurai slammed his sword’s hilt against the floor and pushed himself back onto his feet. Fury burned red in his gaze. “You filthy monkeys...! I will slaughter you all!” It was only then he noticed the Marine-shaped missile heading his way. Ah, a little too late there.

Big and heavy stomps swiftly turned into lighter stomps when Ryoichi released his zoan form, returning back into his regular shape. With swift movements, he tried to make it to Yumiko's location, perhaps just in a nick of time before Anton flew into the no-good samurai. His aim was clear. To take away his injured comrade from the active 'battlefield', perhaps even use his 'superior' first aid knowledge to mend her wounds.

With both of his hands, he grabbed onto the smaller than him woman to carry her at least twenty meters away from the battlefield, if not possibly more, near the royal guard who had made sure that the royalty was either protected, some nobles have even perhaps been taken away from the big room.

Gently he placed Yumiko down on the ground and immediately motioned to the royal guards to go and fetch some help, a medic perhaps. But the blood that flew out of wounds had to be stopped immediately, or at least hold them for a bit until the help arrived.

Ryoichi immediately moved his hands to unwrap the white boxing bandages from around them, and without absolutely any hesitation, he did what he could to try and wrap them around Yumiko and pull them tightly over the wounds, letting the white bandages immediately be soaked with the red color of the blood. "Yeah no commander, I won't let you go that easy." he mumbled lowly while he was tending to her wounds until the help arrived, doing his best, for his comrade.

There was deep 'boom!' as Anton collided with the unfortunate assassin. What was hard to tell though was whether it was the collision, or the samurai being launched like a bullet, flying out of the room and out of sight almost instantly.

And with that, the assassination attempt was thoroughly thwarted.

Disregarding the man whom he most likely ejected from the island, Anton made his way over to Ryoichi, and his bleeding out second in command. The young man was doing a good job bandaging her up, but it was clear by her wounds this required more than first aid. "Good job Ryoichi," he said, patting him on the shoulder, "Now we just got to get her back to the shi-"

All of a sudden there was a burst of feathers, filling the room. Fortunately these weren't the sharp kind, but certainly enough to make it difficult to see. Through the flurry though, Anton could see a large form come into the room.

"THIS ISN'T OVER!"

And with that, everything flew from the room, off in the direction the samurai flew. The only noticable difference was that the body of Hawkins was gone. The surrounding guards gripped their weapons, ready to pursue. "Leave them!" Anton ordered, "Go and tend to the queen and the crown prince!" The guards paused, not used to taking orders from someone outside the court, but quickly obeyed.

Anton turned his attention back to Ryoichi. "Think you can carry her?"

With a boom that made the windows chime, the mysterious samurai was launched out of the room like a living cannonball. Blasting off, perhaps for the first time in his life, he disappeared into the distance as a twinkling star. The flight would not kill him though, no... But rather the sudden stop at the end.

Meanwhile, the wounded woman stirred weakly. Being carried sent jolts of agony through her frame with each step. A single eye opened ever so slightly. Somehow, she recognized her comrade’s blurry, swirling silhouette. “Ryo...ichi...” She croaked, her voice drowning beneath the commotion.

When the boxer started staunching the flow, the swordswoman gritted her teeth with a pained grunt. The wound was exactly as bad as it looked. Cloth and flesh alike had been sliced apart in a single, flawlessly smooth slash. It ran deep enough that the pale ribs peeked through. Layer by layer, the makeshift bandage covered the grim sight.

Despite the sorry state, or perhaps because of it, the suicidally stubborn samurai started struggling. She pushed against the man’s touch, trying to roll onto her stomach. “Let me... fight... please...” She brandished her broken sword. Squinting through the haze of suffering, she sought the foe. Where had he gone...? She could not rest, until...

“My duty... I must...”

If Ryoichi didn’t hold Yumiko down, she would force herself back onto her knees. ...Only to collapse when her trembling legs failed to carry her. And if the man failed to catch her, she would hit the floor like a sack of potatoes. Yet still... Her shaky hand pressed against the floor again... Trying to push her broken body up once more... Driven by blind devotion, she was willing to destroy herself to accomplish her mission.

The Rear Admiral had made the right choice, finishing off the Commander’s opponent then and there. She was in no condition to fight. Hell, she was in no condition to move. It was best not to think of what would have happened, had she been allowed to throw herself at the sharp blade one more time...

Despite listening to Yumiko's request to keep on fighting, as stubborn as she is, Ryoichi left that wish unfulfilled, even if it did mean it would hurt Yumiko's feelings... Heck, this isn't the time to have one's feelings hurt over something like this! This was the matter of life and death, and Ryoichi did not let the death happen, only life, yes.

He kept on holding Yumiko down, not holding her down with strong force so he wouldn't hurt her, but with just enough so she wouldn't be able to move anywhere with her fragile body. He even turned her back on her back just so she wouldn't have the bloody parts touching the ground, or let the blood flow out even more. That is the right thing to do? Right? Hard to say, being a medic was never his strong suit.

"Listen Yumiko. The fight is over. We won. You did your best, and that is what matters... The man was barely standing after you had finished, heck, even a wind would have blown him down. You can relax now, everything is okay. We'll get you the help to mend those wounds fast."

Ryoichi smiled as he looked down at laying Yumiko to who he still tended to. Yes, the honorific Commander title was dropped and replaced with just 'Yumiko*. He had not known her for a long time, but it was clear that the man had begun to care for her as the comrade he is. Good friendship makes the dream team. To try and approach her with more personal care is maybe what would calm her down more, and help to get to her. They still got long adventures ahead of them.

"It'll all be okay Yumiko, just stay with us. We still got a lot of things to do, a lot of traveling, and a lot of adventures as a team." he remained comforting her. Where the hell are those royal medics?! This palace isn't that big. Perhaps what Anton assumably suggested was right? To the question, if Ryoichi could carry Yumiko, he nodded, "Of course.".

With his rough hands he gently attempted to pick Yumiko up once again and carry the smaller lady in both of his arms, possibly to their next stop... The medbay!

Hearing Yumiko's weak pleas to keep fighting, Anton gently knelt down by her side. "It's ok," he said gently, "Like Ryoichi said, the battle is over. The prince is safe. You performed your duty admirably." He would leave out how he took out her opponent. He had seen what happens when Yumiko gets down on herself.

Fortunately, it seemed a trip all the way back to the ship was unnecessary. Someone had apparently displayed enough initiative to send a message to the Grand Steamer. As such, as they were carrying Yumiko out of the palace, they ran into Dr. Black, bringing his own medical staff. Before long, they were relocated to one of the guest suites, with the good doctor tending to Yumiko.

Celia, who had come with him, finished listening to Anton's tale. "That's crazy! Why would they think they could just burst in and do that?" Anton gave a small nod of agreement. "My guess is they planned to burst in and kill them all before they had time to react." Celia nodded. That made sense. "Any idea who they were?" Anton shrugged, "I don't recall hearing about any Marquise de Aviar, though he seemed close enough to his cohorts to get thrm out of there instead of abandoning them."

There was one potential clue. He looked to Ryoichi, "That bruiser seemed to know you though. Got any info on them?"

Yumiko’s single open eye blinked at Ryoichi’s insistent claims. “Over...?” Her first instinct was to believe him. After all, he was her ally. Worries whirled in her head, but his presence pushed against them. Yes, he was right there... Their foes were nowhere to be seen...

And yet...

A flash of pain made the swordswoman flinch. It painted a vivid picture of the mysterious samurai onto the torn canvas of her mind. Her last memory was of him standing before her. Then... Then he vanished and... Another surge of suffering tore down her torso. She gritted her teeth. No, she couldn’t remember. It all went black.

Weakly, the wounded Commander looked up at the Rear Admiral. His kind words barely reached her. “Master...” She wanted to believe him. Tried to believe him. But... Call it intuition, call it instinct, she simply couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling seeping into her soul. Something felt... wrong.

Being picked up made Yumiko’s wound cry out in protest. “Urk-!” She quickly bit her tongue, suppressing her voice. A true samurai did not feel pain. “I... can... walk...” She quietly lied to anyone who cared to listen, most of all herself. Fortunately, her body didn’t agree with the foolish idea.

While drifting on the border of reality, time lost all meaning. The weasel woman closed her eyes just for a second... Only to suddenly find herself in a lavish room. Her bed was soft... Too soft. Much too good for someone like her. Yet when she tried to clamber out of it, her body refused to cooperate.

Yumiko’s open eye found the familiar mask of the ship’s doctor. Watching him work was oddly mesmerizing. Ruined clothing was removed, bloodied skin was cleaned, wounds were closed. Needles, stitches, bandages all danced together. She understood none of it, yet somehow it looked very assuring.

Exhaustion caught up with the wounded woman again. No matter how she tried to fight it, sleep dragged her back into darkness. Perhaps the doctor and his sedatives had something to do with it... But it was all for the best.

"It certainly was an odd ambush... At an open crowded palace like this, only a maniac would even think of doing something like that." Ryoichi had joined the conversation both Anton and Celia were having while they were staying in the lavish guest room, which was their current base of operation and medbay in one.

Occasionally, Ryoichi couldn't help but turn his head a bit to take a glance at Yumiko who was still being tended by the plague...- The Doctor. While he was looking at her, a rather worried glance appeared on his facial expression, but it got relieved a bit when he ensured himself that the commander would be fine, just needs plenty of rest and time to heal... Something that Ryoichi would surely give her... The question is though, would she give herself that?

His attention would return back to Anton after his question about the Hawk-like boxer he fought not too long ago... Hawkins. "Well, we certainly go way back. I defended my title once against him, which I lost... Only to retake during our next fight... What had happened to him after that is beyond me since I joined the academy days after my victory." he told his past to Anton, with excitement in his voice, and long pauses in his sentence... Yes... The glory days.

"I am sure local Notice newscoo tried to pry into his past, could be worth finding something there. Unfortunately, I was too focused on my rematch to care what the newscoo." a lightbulb got lit in his head, an idea was handed out by him. It is only a question if Anton would think it's a good one. But he had not finished giving out suggestions... Oh no, he is feeling bold now with handing out the suggestions. "Tracking back to their motives, the castle should be searched through. It's quite possible our fight was nothing but a distraction. There's plenty of able hands for it. And if time's right, we should head back to the ship to give Yumiko the help she needs."

Anton listen to what Ryoichi had to say. So, a former boxing rival, huh? Certainly a big change to go from boxing to attempting regicide. His words about the attack being a distraction made sense. "We know they're still out there. You're right, we should search the grounds just to be safe." "That won't be necassary."

Everyone turned to see none other than the Amber Queen herself approaching. Anton gave a small bow. "Your majesty. I trust you and young Charles are alright?" The queen smiled and nodded. "He is in his room, safe and sound. I've dispatched the guards to search the entire castle. No stone will be left unturned." She looked over the gathered marines, "It has also been decided. Until either my husband is returned safely, or Charles comes of age, I shall be the acting ruler of Flevance. After everything that has happened, the nobility weren't in a hurry to object." She looked to Anton. "I've also sent word to Marineford. I do believe your assignment here will be ending shortly."

Celia spoke up. "But aren't you worried they will come after you as well?" Queen Wenislass chuckled. "You don't become the queen of a place like this is you can't put the fear of God into people. Those vipers thought they had a chance with my son, but they won't dare act against me." Anton nodded. "I understand your majesty. But with all due respect, we would like to remain here a little longer. We just want to make sure the transfer of power goes smoothly, and to ensure those assassins are gone." The queen smiled. "Of course, though while you're here, you're here as royal guests, not as my guards. You will be given our full hospitality while you're here."

She looked over at the door to the room Yumiko was resting in. "How is she doing?" "Our doctor informed us she'll make a full recovering. She's resting right now," Anton replied. The queen nodded. "Charles wanted to send his apologies. He feels terrible that your second in command was hurt so badly protecting his life." Anton gave her a smile. "She did her duty happily, and would be glad to know he's safe. I'll pass on his kind words though." The queen gave a small smile. "Thank you Mr. La'croix. I shall leave you all to it then."

Anton gave one last bow to the queen as she turned to leave. He then turned his attention to the others. "Well, looks like we've got ourselves some royal shore leave until our next orders. So, I guess take the time to relax. But keep your guard up incase anything happens, alright?"

With thread and gauze, the awful injuries were slowly mended and hidden away. As the finishing touch, the doctor gently pulled the big blanket over the patient. To an amateur eye, all may have seemed well. However, full recovery would still take time. Optimistic souls would estimate a couple of weeks to a month, as long as he got plenty of rest.

Realistic souls knew she would never stay put for that long.

For now though, sleep kept Yumiko in its tight clutches. The discussion happening around her was lost in the dreamless darkness. Perhaps it was better this way. She didn’t need to know the truth just yet...

Right outside of the room, however, a couple of curious guards caught the conversation. Oh, they wouldn’t dream of eavesdropping... Perish the thought... But now that a juicy bit of gossip just so happened to fall into their laps, it would have been unfair to keep it from others. Especially with so much free time.

Over the following days, rumors were passed from person to person in a grown-up game of broken telephone. Whispers upon whispers... In the barracks, in the mess hall, in the showers... The Commander had gotten destroyed by a mysterious assassin, one claimed. Oh, but the Rear Admiral had beaten the guy in one hit, another knew. How useless, the chorus of soldiers chided.

In such fertile ground, questions and theories popped up like mushrooms after rain. If the weird woman was so laughably weak... How had she even gotten her rank? Not through power or smarts for sure, so that kind of narrowed it down, eh? Maybe now she would be given a cushy desk job... Or 'below a desk job', more like!

Every time, filthy laughter crowned the nasty speculation.

As for Yumiko, well, it was only a matter of time before the rumors would reach her... Before some cabin boy blurted out too much within her earshot... When that happened, who knows how she might react? How hard would she try to prove her worth? But... That would be a whole another struggle.

A storm was coming.

The question remained... Could anyone stop it?

Ryoichi would bow his head as the royalty had entered the room, this time, the now acting queen herself. He took a moment to take a couple of steps backwards to give the room for Anton and her to talk, being the petty officer, he did not find it a proper manner to be in the present so close to those two, or as some royalties would say (mostly bad ones), he would taint the area with his low rank! An obvious over-exaggeration in Ryoichi's head, but it's better not to take the risk.

With silence, he listened over the conversation. As much as he wanted to nod his head to some things, he remained in his at-ease stance. He did hear nothing but good news. The palace would be searched, and they can stay for a bit while until their comrade recovers... But for some odd reason, he couldn't help but feel uneasy.

Why was the nobility even considering letting the young Charles rule in the first place, and not have his mother take over the reign until the prince had come of age? Yes, rules of nobility work different... But one could expect them to have some common sense? Oh, this certainly made Ryoichi feel uneasy. What if this whole assault was some sort of elaborate plan by the nobility? Or even worse... By the mother queen herself? The nobility can be sneaky... A good promise there, a sweet smile there, some kindness thrown in...

No, that can't be right... The overthinking was not good for him, that should be someone else's problem. The best course of action is to accept the fact that this is over, but be mindful off of it. After the nobility had left, Ryoichi could feel a bit more at ease. After he had received the following orders to relax but to keep the guard up, Ryoichi knew...
