Only when he truly respects an opponent does he actually use a red ribbon to tie his hair back out of his face completely.

Scars: He has a long straight scar running just along the edge of his left eye, any closer to the center of his face and he likely would have lost the eye itself. As it is the scar doesn't hamper his sight but he prefers not to show it as it reminds him of his greatest loss in the past. Revealing it to an opponent is a sign of respect from Othello, the humility to acknowledge his past weakness in the face of a strong opponent, as well as his desire to overcome that old weakness.
Gear: While he actually enjoys dressing nicely and does have a variety of clothing he wears casually, if he's expecting to be fighting--which he very often is--then he does have a particular outfit he tends to wear by default. The white double breasted top has padding and plates affixed in key locations to maximize movement while offering some protection to vital areas. A long red sash is affixed around his left shoulder and then run down underneath his chest piece before being tired off at his waist, with the rest trailing behind him almost like a waist cape. His pants are based closely on hakama, though with a more distinctly separated inseam. Description: Not overly imposing in form, standing perhaps a little below average among individuals of his home island and therefore quite a bit shorter than some of the taller specimens roaming the Blues and beyond. Despite his unimpressive stature he is extremely fit, muscles toned from long hours of daily practice with the blade. But even that is often hidden under his clothing, as he will never have the appearance of a bodybuilder. Rather he maintains a very lean, agile build that allows him to stay very flexible in combat. Personality: Othello is the kind of person who would start a fight just for the sheer joy of fighting. Proving oneself against a worthy opponent is the greatest possible joy to someone like Othello. His childhood was a happy one and he grew up spoiled and wanting for very little. Perhaps that is what ultimately made him crave something that he has to earn through adversity, since it was the only thing out of his grasp. He doesn't like being given things and looks down on those who freely accept handouts or the easy way out of their problems. Holding his tongue has never been his strong suit and in his mind it doesn't really make sense to. Either what you say makes someone realize the error of their ways and they're better off, or you make them mad enough to fight and then hopefully you get a good fight. Either way is a win in Othello's book. Generally smiling, his happy attitude is only magnified in combat. He tends to not take things overly seriously, even if it might be safer for him to do so. When he really respects his opponent he does reveal a slightly more serious side but the sheer joy of facing a challenging opponent is sure to be written over his face and obvious in his body language.
Despite his brash and flamboyant personality he tends to not berate or belittle people. Telling someone they're wrong or doing something stupid when they could be improving in some way is one thing. Talking down to someone just to talk down or insulting someone to make oneself feel better is another thing entirely. He'll freely admit when he has no idea what he's talking about and happily allow others to educate him on topics he doesn't understand. A strange mix of pride for his talents and humility towards his weaknesses is what has allowed him to continue growing not just as a swordsman but as a person. Ultimately he wants to constantly be pushing himself and improving, stagnation is perhaps his greatest fear. When he hits a wall it rarely stop him for long. If he feels he didn't complete his goal, then the solution is simple, get stronger until you can. Othello believes at least somewhat in the idea of "might makes right", if you're weak and don't strive for more then you don't have any reason to complain in his mind. Get stronger and change things, its as simple as that as far as he is concerned. Some might call this simplistic, stupid or short sighted, and frankly Othello doesn't especially care about their opinions. He holds no real animosity towards Pirates, Marines, Revolutionaries or anyone else, simply seeing them all as potential stepping stones on his path to self improvement. Othello wishes for his growth to continue endlessly, for his blade to truly be boundless.

As a child Othello generally got whatever he wanted. If he wanted books to read, they'd be on his bedrooms small bookshelf by the evening. Wanted a sword to practice with? A former Marine would stop by and show him some basics the next afternoon. To say that Othello was a rowdy child would be something of an understatement. A part of him would always regret what he must have put his parents through. Their inability to understand him, to see that he didn't want to just be handed everything, well that certainly didn't help. But as a child there was no real way he could have articulated his desire to stand on his own two feet. In his parent's eyes, they had worked hard and struggled so that their children wouldn't have to. Othello's older brother and younger sister had no difficulty enjoying the luxuries their position as wealthy merchants brought them, so it just made it even harder to understand Othello's stubborn resistance.

Pushing himself to overcome a fellow competitor, some of them quite strong and a few bigger or older than himself, it was a rush like nothing he'd felt before. Whereas he'd seemed somewhat chaotic and directionless before, he now threw himself into practice with a passion. He'd personally challenged Laurent and swiftly found him in a swordsman more skilled than any he'd faced before. Throwing himself into the fight, he'd forgotten his main task, defending the product and the merchants transporting it. One of Laurent's men had gotten hold of the merchant's daughter, threatening to cut her down if Othello didn't throw down his sword. That moment of shock and distraction had cost Othello. Captain Laurent carved a line up the side of his face, the blood getting into his eye and temporarily blinding him. In truth if Othello had been a hair slower he'd have lost the eye entirely. But small blessings aside that distraction had cost him the fight and he knew it. The goods had been seized and the pirates left feeling triumphant. Thankfully they had not hurt the girl, Othello wouldn't have stopped fighting had they not released her wounded eye or not.
To some people, that might have been a cautionary tale about putting a pointless fight before the lives and livelihoods of others. But Othello had a different take away entirely. To him it was a wakeup call that strength, true strength in combat, should have been able to overcome that minor obstacle.
