Zahard grew up an orphan in the Kano Country, where he was often pitied because of his appearance. His inspiration as a doctor grew from the multitude of tests run on him by the doctors of the island. Though he always felt healthy, his appearance betrayed him, making many believe he was deathly ill. It was not until his early teens when he'd heard stories from pirates and the One Piece that many who sailed under the black flag sought. These stories always captivated him, as he couldn't relate to many of his peers growing up. The thought of escaping to the sea and exploring the world, far removed from his depressing life in Kano was something he dreamed of.
When he was old enough to work, the boy would join a small pirate crew to escape the island. Though he knew it was illegal, that did not dissuade the young man. However, being aboard a random pirate ship meant seeing the side of piracy that he desired most. He quickly found himself surrounded by thieves and thugs who cared not about adventure, but rather abusing others and taking advantage of those weaker than them. Treated well enough because of his position on the ship, Zahard devised a cruel plan to poison the scummy crew he was part of. With his medical supplies, he synthesized a slow-acting drug that would inevitably prove lethal. Under the guise of a mock viral disease, he administered this drug to his fellow crewmates, and by the next morning, he was on board a ghost vessel. Sending their bodies overseas, the young doctor and pirate had done something horrible, yet it did not phase him. He saw it as purging the world of disease, and let the ship float aimlessly in the West Blue. From there, the ship would crash into an island from which he'd continue his journey...
