Elena "Songbrook"
Basic Character Information
First Name: Elena
Middle Name/Initial: N/A
Last Name: N/A
Epithet: Songbrook
Birthdate: Oct. 23, 1803
Gender: Female
Species/Race/Tribe: Mermaid, Tiger Shark
Faction: Bounty Hunter
Profession: Bounty Hunter, Fisher, Smuggler
Physical Appearance
Height: 14' 7"
Weight: 1272 lbs.
Hair Style: Long
Hair Color: Blue
Eye Color: Yellow-Orange
Scars: N/A
Clothing and Accessories: Elena's outfit varies between minimalist and flashy depending on whether she's working. At the least, she wears a modest halter top and skirt that blend into her skin color when looking down into the water from above; both fitted so as not to fall off when swimming at high speeds. When not hunting or otherwise about town, she favors dresses that are easy to get into with her large frame and compliment her looks. She adores jewelry, particularly bangles and necklaces that can be removed and secured easily, but not artificial makeups.
Description: Elena is a large woman, by human standards. Nearly three-quarters of her body's great length is taken by her immensely strong tail. When lying on her belly, the top and sides of her body, as well as her arms and back, are colored a blue-green that camouflages her in the dark waters, though her underside, belly, and face are more flesh-colored. Even the humanoid half of her frame is well toned and built for strength, lending to the blend of hard and soft features that fill her face with an inhuman yet alluring quality. Her body sports large fins that end in sharp points, including the triangular fins of her tail, with the upper fin being substantially larger than the bottom. Her long blue hair reaches down to her hips, or where hips would be were it not for the tail, and repels water effectively enough to keep its body and volume even when fresh out of the sea. Faint stripes of slightly darker skin color can be seen along her length, though she estimates they'll have disappeared altogether in another couple of years.
The Past
Main Traits: Ambivert, Cunning, Guarded, Soft-Hearted, Violent
Likes: Beaches, the color Green, Food, Jewelry, the Sea
Dislikes: Cold, Nobles, Slavery
Unique laugh: Pffacacaca!
Hometown: Flevance; Though Elena was born and raised in Flevance, she does not consider it her home. The Sea itself is her home, and the islands merely stops along the way of life.
Personality: Elena is the type to keep herself closely guarded. To open herself up to others is to be vulnerable, and to be vulnerable is to be harmed. So, to ensure she is never hurt, she wears the guise of the loner and tries to push others away. However, she does care for others, and is extremely empathetic of the their plight, especially children. This strange dichotomy has tormented her for her entire adult life, depriving her of her want to be around others and socialize while leaving her too frightened to do so. One effort she has taken to remedy this and her own feelings about her lifestyle is in her work, reclaiming lost goods from the ocean floor -among other, less reputable sources- to be given to those less fortunate and in need.
This unfulfilled want to know others is perhaps the source of much of her anger and aggression, which she pours into her official job of hunting those with egregious bounties. She is brutal, sometimes savage and needlessly cruel, in her approach to her hunts. Sometimes, she realizes after the fact that she's taken pleasure in making her bounties suffer before they die; the fear and self-loathing this causes only makes her worse.
On some nights, those who frequent the seaside may claim to hear the sound of her singing on the rocks near the shore. Those who have swear there were no words to her song, but merely all the pain and misery she's felt being let out in her artful cries. She has heard the rumors in town, but does not stop them, for she feels some degree of happiness knowing others enjoy something she does and creates. It almost makes up for the awful things she does.
- History:
Elena was born in captivity, the supposed property of a well off noble in the Amber Kingdom. It was only under the care of her mother that she was kept safe, raised to be the pet of the noble's children. She was taught the etiquette that would keep her safe from the lash, and in secret, the merfolk arts that would help her to defend herself should the worst ever happen. Fortunately, the noble was kept under the impression her mother was simply teaching her child to sing, so that she may be a better treasure for him in the future.
Unfortunately, the worst did come to happen. As all children are want to do, the noble's spawn liked to show off their pet to their friends. Elena had come to expect some abuse, perhaps being made to sing until her throat was dry and sore, but the adolescent boys tried to cross a line she never expected. Her voice traveled far, far enough to reach her mother in her tank, and the chaos that ensued was a kind never seen before in the home. The enraged mother broke free from her restraints, caring more for her child's safety than her own, and was swift in dealing out her retribution.
Swift enough to do damage that could never be taken back, but not so strong that she could overpower the guards.
By the next day, Elena and her mother had been strung up in the courtyard, left to dry out and die under the hot sun. Their punishment had been severe, but for the crime of killing the child of nobles, they had to suffer. Tied to posts and denied food or water, they would be left until the elements claimed their lives.
It was sheer coincidence that a particularly confident pirate crew stormed the island the next night, to take advantage of the chaos that had been caused by reports of a pet run amuck. Many died, but the merfolk child was taken into what she thought was safety. Her mother, too exhausted and weak to move and too heavy to lift, was instead shot in the head as the pirates fled.
Elena was only on the ship for several days, long enough to suffer the crew's abuse while she was fed to regain her strength. She heard clearly enough through the door that they intended to sell her off, to make some money off the raid that had cost them a good number of lives. However, these were lowly pirates of the Blue. They couldn't afford the sort of restrains that would contain an angry, upset creature that still mourned the loss of its only loved one.
Before the ship could make port again, the sea claimed the lives of the crew. Creatures of the deep water made a home of the wreckage that had been their vessel. Predators ate well. A child's cries were drowned out by the tumultuous waves.
From then on, the adolescent Elena survived how she could. For several months, she kept herself to the dark seas. There, she was safe from those on the surface who wished to do her harm, but quite simply, she grew lonely. She followed the currents for a time, using the shadows of ships passing above as her guide, until she came to another island. There, she watched the people who lived off the ocean, fishing and taking only what they needed to survive.
However, her curiosity got the better of her one day, and she was caught in a net. Hauled up onto the boat of a local fisherman, she screamed and cried until... Until she found herself cut free of her tangled bonds. He was... He was nice. He asked her her name, and gave her food before helping her off the side of the boat again with warning to try and avoid getting tangled up in any more nets.
For several weeks, she watched this curious man who hadn't harmed her or even expressed any wish to make money off of selling her. He had a family, a wife who kept the lighthouse operating while he was away, and several children. By chance, Elena caught the daughter, about her age, swimming in the ocean one day. Though she was hesitant, the offer to play grabbed her by her childish need to belong, and it was nearly sundown by the time the girl had left.
She returned again the next day, and the next, and the next...
It didn't take long for rumors of the mermaid of the cove to circulate, but the fisherman kept her safe and protected. For several years, Elena grew up in the waters surrounding that island, learning to fish to help out and playing with the children. However, as she had already learned and forgotten in the warm embrace of kindness, the world is a cruel and dark place.
Rare creatures, especially mermaids, are valuable in the black markets of the world. Rumors of the young woman's presence drew more than curious glances and those seeking knowledge; they also drew the worst of the worst who sought to make a quick profit. Sometimes, the local navy or police could frighten off pirates who forgot that Elena was, too, a living thing deserving of kindness and respect.
Other times, they could not.
The smoke of the fire was a strange sight to wake up to in the morning. After all, it was the sea. Where would a fire start? Pirates had set fire to the fishing boats and docks around the island over the night before. They cast their own nets, wide and deep until they dragged the ocean floor in search of their fabled catch. Scared and desperate, Elena was soon cornered in her cove, alongside the family of the fisherman who had failed to lift her out of the water and carry her to safety. With only her arms and tail to propel her on land, she couldn't flee. The fisherman stood between them with a rifle, but the pirates were as merciless as they were cruel.
Seeing the man she had come to think of as a father shot down before her only made Elena to remember her mother, and the pain welling up inside drove her to act and defend the only family she had left. Perhaps she was letting out all the pain the world had seen fit to deal her all at once, or perhaps it was simply the instinct of a long suppressed apex predator. Either way, as awful as the pirates were, she was worse. While their swords and bullets struggled to break her hide without killing their prize, her teeth found easy prey.
The waters themselves fought back, casting large and imposing waves to capsize the small boats that had brought them to shore.
Her song, in utter desperation, burst the ear drums and robbed consciousness from her wrong doers while they attempted to flee.
By the time the frenzy had died, Elena was covered in blood; little of it her own. Breathing deeply, she was met with only looks of fear and hatred from the grieving widow and her children, people she had called her own family, and in a fit of agony and despair, she leapt into the sea.
Though she had tried to return, the blame for all that had happened ultimately fell to her.
Elena swam away from the island.
She would make use of the fishing skills she'd been taught to earn her living after that. It wasn't easy, but it was honest work. However, the young woman's anger never left her, and eventually, she came to learn of the bounty system and what it represented. The worst of the worst were given a value on their heads, and if she could bring them in dead or alive, she would earn that money while ridding the seas of monsters the kind of which had done so much harm to the world. It wasn't an easy decision to make at first, but over time, she came to feel less hesitation.
She became good at it.
She became a local legend, the likes of which sailors only whisper about at night.
Her mother's song became her calling card, one which warned criminals that retribution was nigh.

This was an exceptionally well-written bio! And you weren't kidding about that dark past. Hopefully, one day, Elena will find her happy place somewhere outside of the guts of her bounty hunts.
