Max's birth was, much like the night, full of horrors. His parents were both Marine officers on a three-masted Marine battleship, stationed in the North Blue. With insufficient medical help, Max's mother did not survive childbirth. Blinded by regret and grief, his father soon resigned from the navy and returned home to the Lvneel Kingdom, his newborn baby cradled in his marine coat.
As the years went on, Max and his dad settled into this new way of life. A quiet life where his dad worked as a laborer with his brother, whilst most of Max's care was done by his aunt Rose. She was an incredible storyteller, filling the young boy's head with stories of fruits that gave you magical powers and adventurers sailing to unexplored islands on the far edge of the world. One story in particular stuck with Max. A story of a boy that hailed from the same island as Max. A boy that became a man by the name of Mont Blanc Noland.
The next ten years of Max' life were pretty great. His father never met a new woman, but that role was more than filled by aunt Rose and Max loved her deeply. The boy idolized his father and uncle and aspired to become just like them. Disaster struck shortly after the boy's thirteenth birthday. It was a winter day and Max's father had dropped him off with aunt Rose as usual before leaving for work. However, when evening came and his dad and uncle did not appear, the boy instinctively knew something was wrong. He waited for his aunt to look away for a minute and ran out of the house, intent on finding his father and uncle.
It was freezing and the boy had trouble seeing more than a few feet ahead because of the snow. He persevered for as long as he could, but saw no other option but to hide from the blizzard under a tree on the side of the road. Cold, alone and scared, he lost consciousness.
The next thing he saw was the ceiling of his aunt & uncle's house with his aunt sitting over him. He turned his head towards the kitchen to see his uncle, bottle in hand, crying uncontrollably. Without asking, Max knew what happened. But before he could say anything, his uncle turned his head towards him and belted out 'He's dead, my boy. I'm so sorry.'
It took Max hours to regain composure for long enough to ask what had happened. Apparently, they had been working on clearing rubble from a mountain path, but visibility had been really bad that day because of the snow. It seems Max's dad lost his footing and fell down the cliff.
The next few years of Max's life were very different than the twelve before. He secluded himself from everyone, including his own family. He spent most of his time roaming the streets of Lvneel, getting into fights and committing petty crime.
Quickly, the boy realized that he was no skilled fighter. With reluctance, he approached his uncle and told him that he'd decided he was going to be an adventurer. He loved them deeply, but without parents, every connection he had to his home was gone. Knowing that nothing could change his mind, the man spent the next years teaching Max everything he knew. He had never been a marine, like his brother, but knew his way around a pistol and tried to teach Max as well as he could. Max proved to be a worthwhile student, picking up the skills much faster than his uncle could've ever suspected.
Max, however, had grown a habit of going out at night and looking for trouble. Fighting was the only time the boy felt alive and while he was still not much of a fighter, he learned how to take a punch.
On his seventeenth birthday, Max had decided that it was time to start his journey. After a teary-eyed goodbye with his aunt and uncle, the boy boarded a boat for Loguetown in the East Blue.
The boy has been spending the last few months in Loguetown, disillusioned by the prospect of a new adventure and committing petty theft still as a means to survive whilst trying to find a way to get off the island and onto the next one.
