Summary Brood's henchwoman, Erudite Graves, is sent to Rubeck to secure supplies for a large scale operation that her captain wishes to partake in. Along the way she stumbles upon Aya Ruiz just as she tries to find safe passage off Rubeck Island to the nearest island. Feeling uneasy leaving a fellow seafaring woman alone on an island full of smugglers, she agrees to help Aya find safe passage to the island of Notice. But negotiations with the local smuggler captains proves a bit more taxing than Erudite first anticipated.
OOC: Erudite has a strong rural Louisianan accent.
Erudite tossed the small satchel of coins upwards and caught it without effort, looking around the busy smuggling port with a smirk on her face that indicated she was having a good time. She liked Rubeck, despite how low in activity it happened to be for a smuggler’s port, but something about negotiating with her fellow pirates got her blood boiling. It really made her feel like she was with the shits. Especially in regards to playing the game of coins.
Her white new boots were goofin and she wore tiny, tight, blue jean shorts that hugged her seafoam green thighs snugly. Her jet black jacket hung off her shoulders and her top was actually a vest that was also black in color. With her white tie matched her cowgirl boots effectively. On her head sat her cowgirl hat, the same color as the boots. She wasn’t trying to look fancy, she just wore this outfit often. Came with being part of a crew that belonged to someone famous and determined on the world stage.
Still, the day was long and she had other business to attend to. So after lacing her boots up and strapping that satchel to her waist. She began her sultry walk through the small cove, moving past crates and shipments being moved around frantically. Ignoring the barking of sellers and the arguing of those trying to buy those products in kind.
Her attention was selfishly focused on her one and only quarry, getting supplies loaded onto the vessel that she had bought specifically for this trip. Some of the members of the Primetime Pirates (As they had yet to become P.T.S.D. at this point.) found themselves doing their job. Others were buying their own shit. But these were all just grunts.
They didn’t fucking matter.
But what did matter was a sight that befell Erudite not too far away from here. It was someone that looked like a mink or a zoan user, but either way Erudite could tell that this person was female. It seemed as though they were waiting next to a line of people trying to buy passage off the island. But she wasn’t sure what the woman was doing here or why. She only approached her because of the solidarity that she felt with there finally being another woman here. It wasn’t safe after all. Pretty women were a hot commodity on the slave market, regardless of their vocation.
“Well hey there now, sistah. A pleasure to make your acquaintance. I am Erudite Graves, charmed I’m sure.” She began, wearing a big smile on her face and taking off her cowboy hat as she dipped forward. “I do declare, what is such a lovely creature such as yourself doing here in this boys club? Waiting for a friend?”
She didn’t want to alarm her, but she was doing what she could to remain friendly. Even despite the fact that she was technically the worst kind of person. She placed her hat back on her head, flashing a grin at the mysterious, yet fashionable, mink.

Fri Jul 01, 2022 2:34 pmThis leg of the excursion had not gone to plan. Sure, it was somewhere new, and sure she ultimately had gotten what she came for, but Aya now found herself with a conundrum. It had been particularly difficult due to the nature of the business conducted here to figure out exactly where ships were leaving to and for what purpose around here. Even with her keen ears, the tight lips of smugglers made it incredibly challenging to plan the next portion of her path. Someplace nicer! Notice had seemed like the perfect break from the last few small crime-ridden and dangerous islands she had found herself visiting recently.
The red panda girl was certainly a unique sight among the others occupying the island and the frantic look in her eyes made her distress about it rather obvious. It wasn't like she had much of value on her, but in the right market if she found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time she might be made into something of value. The cove had provided a cool-toned morning with misty fog over the cliffs and the opportunity to capture the scene on paper was too enticing an opportunity to miss out on.
A billowy green dress clung to her torso and caught on the breeze as the redhead tried her best not to get trampled by passers-by. Pikasso's pack sat high on her shoulders, still glistening with the dew from the morning. A dark velvet beret sat between her two piqued ears, nudging to one side or the other as the girl tried to track any hints of promising leads towards her destination. The clack of pointed boots against stone followed her as she trod through groups of strangers with stares that lingered much longer than she would have preferred.
Aya fell into a cue of people who seemed to be seeking a similar outward-bound voyage with some amount of hesitation. Being this close to lesser minks while they could actually see her was a rarity for her and she felt strange having this many eyes on her. As she peered over her shades as another woman began making her way over to her, one eyebrow cocked curiously.
"Oh! I'm Aya." The mink blinked a few times and gave a small nod in return, a relieved smile starting to form on her face as she greeted the other. "...Ruiz, if it matters. Nice to meet you." A slight rasp in her voice made it seem like she might have been talking a lot lately. Or rather, eluded to how she had spoken more in the last few hours of trying to navigate the coves than she had in a long while. She jutted one clawed thumb towards the others aiming to find a way anywhere other than the island.
" I'm just passing through, actually. I've seen the sights and I'm ready for... clearer waters. I heard someone say Notice is nice this time of year. Sounds like a nice change of scenery."
Aya shifted her weight on her feet a little, hoping that if she did find a way out soon that it would have someplace she could sequester away to rest her wander-weary feet. Her tail swayed just above the ground's surface as she smiled up at the fishy fem.
"Are you leaving, too?"

Erudite plopped down next to the Mink, sitting on a crate that was nearby, and she crossed one of her legs over the other. “Darn tootin! I am in fact heading out to sea shortly. Just stocking up on a few supplies beforehand. Sucks that you’re having trouble getting out of here though, darlin’. I reckon this ain’t the place for dames like us to get stranded. Too many shifty-eyed rascals runnin’ roun’.”
She chuckled a bit as she patted the whip that was on her waist, which was triple braided and looked like it was stained with a red substance.
“Whelp darlin’...” She yawned loudly, stretching her hands over her head, gripping her right elbow as she did. “...we gots time before we can even talk ta’ the boys runnin’ things roun’ here. I reckon we might as well get ta’ know one another.”
Erudite looked over at one of her men and then rotated her finger in the air, making a little twirl motion. The well-dressed man understood what she was asking him to do and he turned on his heels and quickly ran off. The remaining man stood there saying nothing, his shades covering his face, his hands firmly gripped on his rifle.
She turned her attention back towards the fluffy woman, who was extremely adorable. She didn't know why a Mink was all the way out here. But she definitely found it to be amusing.
"Bless yer heart, all the way out here. I came from down under myself, Fishman Island. Long ago, got mixed up with some rough varmints. Men…" She rolled her eyes before looking at the people surrounding them.
She looked back to see if her underlying had returned yet but they still hadn't. With an eye roll she focused back in Aya. She continued speaking, telling a bit about herself to ease whatever tension might be there.
"Was on my own fer a long while, had a lot of folks take advantage of my hospitality. But things are looking up fer me now… making good money. Good friends. And doing work that I'm good at. What more can a gal ask fer?" She clapped her hands together.
She was a loud woman never the less. But none of these men showcased any will to deal with her. They saw the flag on her ship… and in the North… the Primetime Pirates were no joke.
"What's your story? She gleamed.

It didn't feel like she was in any more danger than she already had been in before Erudite's approach, and honestly... the thought of a conversation seemed like a nice distracting way to pass the wait.
" Oh... Fishman Island? I hear it's beautiful there."
A soft hum of appreciation and a bit of scrambling later and the short mink clambered to a seat on another crate. The fluff of her tail settled across her lap as she tapped the heels of her boots against the wooden side of the box. Her gaze settled on Erudite again.
Aya couldn't recall if she'd ever seen a fishwoman before, so this seemed to be a rare treat of a conversation opportunity. Just as well, it wasn't often she was spotted by someone so friendly.
"This uhm, isn't the sort of place I tend to flock to. I'm sure that's probably... pretty obvious, hm? But I... well, I overheard someone talking about the cliffs around here and I... had to see them for myself."
When she heard herself aloud she realized how silly of a reason it sounded like to enter such a den of thieves. Still, she had been able to dodge getting into too much trouble so far! She wasn't out of the cove yet, though, so she had to stay alert.
The icy peaks of her ears twitched softly as she tried to ignore the conversations around them and focus clearly on Erudite.
"I usually just pass through places but this cove is a bit... different to try to get out of. Not a lot of these lesser minks like to be outright about what they're up to... Not to me at least."
Aya gave a snicker and shook her head. She was used to being ignored, but it certainly made it a bit harder to find a ride to Notice. In the back of her mind she knew all too well it was only a matter of time until some scumbag felt particularly bold. She wanted to put as much distance between her and Rubeck long before that point.
"It's... good that youteia are having a nice change of luck. I don't tend to stick around places long enough to make many friends, myself... There's always another landscape to paint somewhere new."
For reasons Aya was utterly unaware of it felt like a bit less of the looming gazes were daring to stare for too long. Whatever it was, the small panda seemed more at ease as she made the realization. Perhaps it was just safety in numbers!
" ...I'm a traveling painter." Finding the right words to communicate was a skill Aya had let get rusty during the past few years, but the excitement of a friendly face had her determined to toil with it. It took her a few moments of thought, but she spoke up again.
"I wanted to get a look of things far from Zou. It's hard to find inspiration in the same old forests, youteia know? I've been traveling alone for a long while now."
"But uh... lesser minks usually aren't too excited to see me around these days. It... makes getting places... Trickier."
The fluffy red panda scrunched up her nose with distaste and shrugged.
"But... what can you do, hmm? C'est la vie..."

She stretched her arms over her head, yawning strongly as she wore a big grin, turning her body to the side so she could get a better look at the Mink woman.
“That is absolutely fascinating, darlin’! I ain’t ever been to Zou before, nor have I ever been to the New World myself.”
Erudite didn’t have anything keeping her engaged in this conversation beyond the fact that she was wholly enthralled with the conversation. She was also amused that this Aya flat-out called the people here lesser mink.
It was a situation that she hadn’t truly thought of before. But did they really consider these humans to be of the same race? Not exactly the same thing in her mind, but it wasn’t a big deal.
“A painter huh? How long ‘ave you been doin’ it? I don’t reckon I’ve ever heard of a paintin’ Mink before. Do you ‘ave your work with you now?”
She was curious about what she had made and wanted to see what it looked like. Granted, she wasn’t exactly too worried about if the art was good or bad. But she wondered if this woman used her own fur in her brushes, or if it was rude to assume such a thing in the first place.
“I don’t ‘ave any skills when it comes to art personally, I am good at sailin’ and I can crack a whip in a fancy manner, but that’s about it really.” She rubbed her chin for a moment as the man she sent away approached.
“Finally, took y’all forever to fetch some drink? Ya gotta me fuckin’ with me. Hurry up now.”
He handed her one of the cups that he brought, and she took it and handed it over to Aya waiting for her to take it before she grabbed the second cup.
Holding it outwards as the man rose up a medium-sized tokkuri, tiling it and pouring out the warm sake into each of the cups before nodding his head and taking a few steps back. She’d then move the cup towards Ayas in an attempt to toast them before moving it back to her lips and drinking down the expensive liquid.
“Ah, now that’s some sweet fire!” She licked her lips happily before peering over toward Aya.
“Wait so you’re a traveling artist, where is your ship at? How are you peddling your goods?” She wondered if she just took her art and sold it off to any random merchant that she came across or not.
It was important that she knew who she was dealing with. Merchants were often untrustworthy, a lot more than she thought Pirates were. At least with Pirates, there was an expectation of betrayal. Everyone was on the same page from the start.
“I mean if you’re willing to talk about it that is.” She didn’t want to pry too much into this woman’s personal information.
But she wasn’t in the business of just randomly talking to people either. Information was power and she wanted to know as much about this woman as possible. She wasn’t the kind of woman that could hide an ulterior motive, no matter the circumstance. So she didn’t even pretend to act like she was just getting to know this woman for the shits and giggles.

Aya was caught off guard by the offered cup but took it in hand regardless, holding it out to have it filled with a polite nod of thanks. It was a welcome offering, and after a small toast, she downed the drink.
The burn caused the mink to sputter a little before trying to further explain herself. She shrugged the strap of her backpack off carefully and pulled it into her lap. The olive green material was splotched with various daubs and smears of colorful paints as well as ink and charcoal.
"I've been painting since I was a little cub."
She admitted freely and fondly, rummaging through the bag of belongings while keeping it cautiously hugged to her person. A bound book that looked like it had seen better days emerged from the depths.
"My mom's good with plants and... well, turns out plants are pretty good for making paint. Who knew, huh?" With the cup nestled carefully on top of her backpack, she flipped through a few of the pigment-stained pages.
The first was a cool-toned painting of the coves to one side of the island, then a rocky rubble-covered landscape with splotches of bright purple florals. Quickly followed by sunset scenes from the decks of ships and a sky full of bright constellations, all signed with fairly recent dates and the same scrawled
'-P I K A S S O-' in one corner.
"I... well, I don't really... Sell, so much as... trade? Some of it. When I need to. I'm.. not doing this for money. I also don't have a ship...I guess people just don't really mind my company much when I tag along in their travels." The book closed back up between her dark paws and she tucked it back away. It wasn't that far from the truth, was it? What people couldn't see, they couldn't mind much.
That was usually the case, anyways.
"The boat I came in with, unfortunately.. left... without me... This morning, actually. I was hoping to be out of here by now." She laughed off a soft sigh and took the cup back into hand. "... Youteia know how it can be out here, hm?"
"You said youteia sail, right? You have a ship, then?" She tried not to sound too overly excited about the prospect. Despite herself, she leaned in a little and grinned as she peered over her glasses at Erudite with inspired glee at the woman. "....That's so cool!"
Her gaze bounced back to the men, and she fluffed with further excitement.
"...You have like... a crew?"
The little panda's voice was hushed as if she didn't already know she was surrounded by criminals. A bubbly giddiness perked her ears as she leaned in and quietly inquired. Mostly to satiate her imaginative curiosity.
For a moment she seemed lost in her thoughts about it, an almost star-struck look in her eyes. The world outside of Zou never ceased to amaze. She had always thought her dad's stories were just tall tales, but every day she believed them more.
"My brother is a sailor, too!" Pikasso hummed proudly, giving another nod.

A smile crept across the teal blue features of Erudite’s face as she watched the Mink react to the strong brew in a manner expected. They had just bought this bottle right here in this very port, but it was a favorite of Ricky, one of her crewmates.
Having a bit of it before they disembarked was par for the course.
Erudite listened intently as Pikasso began to explain the origin of her career in artistry, or at least she had assumed that was going to be the subject of conversation given the introductive statement posed. Apparently, she mixed different plants together in order to get her colors. That was surprisingly ingenious of her, perhaps she was someone that would be able to help them paint their flag…
Only time would tell. That was still a long way out. But she made a mental note of it, craftsmen, artisans, and others with trade skills were always handy to have in one’s back pocket. The members of the Primetime Pirates were always aware of this fact.
It's why they ran themselves more like a business than a Pirate crew. Perhaps it was getting time for a bit of rebranding.
She agreed with the young woman’s statements, nodding her head and crossing her arms underneath her breast, though she allowed for her right hand to stay gripped on the cup as she sipped it again. Pursing her lips as she thought of a response.
“Well slap my arse and call me a bananagator, that's some mighty fine talent ya got there darlin’.” She spoke in an enthusiastic manner. “Only thing Ma and Pa ever taught me was how ta rustle up trouble and command water, that’s all a gal like me is good for. Might need to take me up a trade. But I respect how you’re not in this for the dough-ray-me.”
She outstretched her arm and the man stepped forward again to refill her cup without her having to say as much. As though he was used to this routine already. It was a privilege that came with her rank amongst the members of the crew.
“I got a crew, as ya said, call ourselves the Primetime Pirates. I’m a helmsman actually, sail around on a big ole beast of a boat called Dead Air. No the.” She seemed to be proud to make such a claim, as her chest swelled with pride and her eyes locked onto the mink.
Raising the cup back to her lips she spoke, just before taking yet another sip of the brew.
“Unfortunately, the Cap’n didn’t authorize me to pick up any strays, less I’d be more than happy to let ya come on aboard. But hell, I can negotiate with these cowpokes and get ya set up on a nice comfy ride into Notice. It’s really no big deal, the crew I’m part of has a name that carries weight ‘round here.”
After she took another sip she rose the glass up, pointing over towards a group of rough-looking ugly, human men who didn’t exactly seem to fit the rest of the people here. Though, one of them was a piggish-looking Mink.
“Those boys there have had a brush in with us before, they’d take ya in no problem. But uh… what was that ya said about your brother? He is a sailor? Got many siblings out in the world? I don’t have any, only child ma’self.” She didn’t sound proud, she just seemed at ease with the reality of her own situation.

Aya's heels clicked up against the side of the crate as she gave a thoughtful hum. She nodded slowly, turning her attention to the group Erudite was referring to.
"W-wait, youteia would really help negotiate for me?" The weight of having to figure out who to ask and what to offer was slowly lifting from her shoulders at just the thought. Though usually, the sight of other minks was a reason to celebrate something about the passing glance she took of the boorish man made her stomach feel slightly uneasy. Maybe it was just the booze.
Still, if someone was offering to help out of the goodness of her heart, who was Aya to decline? Maybe she was too quick to judge rough-looking books by their covers.
"I would appreciate that more than I've got words for, actually. If it wouldn't be too much of a bother for you. I'm uh... not much for haggling, you see."
Pikasso fidgeted idly with her claws and nodded quickly. She sat back, now suddenly wishing she paid more attention to the on-goings surrounding local pirates. She stayed away from the world government as much as she could and didn't tend to pay much attention to the news or wanted posters around. Still, Erudite was going out of her way to offer help. It didn't seem like she intended to do Aya any harm, and pirates weren't always bad!
If anything, the fact she was the most engaging company Pikasso had in a long time was worth chancing any amount of worry she had about things. Better options weren't just going to fall into her lap as this had.
"Yeah, I've got a ton of brothers. I hope more of them are out by now, but I know for sure a couple of them are running amuck out there somewhere." She pointed out towards the sea, then shrugged. "... Most of them are probably still just causing trouble at home, though."
"I used to wish I was an only child! You're lucky!" She laughed, sticking her tongue out playfully as she shrugged. "My mom had eleven sons after me and my big bro. It was... noisy." The white fluffy peaks of her ears folded back as she regarded the sounds of her childhood with mild annoyance.
A pang of homesickness ran through her for a few moments. As her gaze met the pirate's, a hopeful thought ran through her mind. She wondered if it was a strange offer, but it wasn't like she was the type to have many chances for making friends.
"...When we both get to Notice... Maybe we could get coffee! I could even paint you, you know, as a thank you! Or.. paint something for you? ... Or something?" As she made the offer she suddenly felt better about the whole ordeal. She could at least try to make things even!
"Either way, the least I could do is get you some coffee to get youteia back for the drink, you know!" She offered insistently, obviously intending to repay the gesture.
"It's not that often that people pay enough attention to me to offer help. I appreciate it!"

She stayed away from the world government as much as she could and didn't tend to pay much attention to the news or wanted posters around. Still, Erudite was going out of her way to offer help. It didn't seem like she intended to do Aya any harm, and pirates weren't always bad!
If anything, the fact she was the most engaging company Pikasso had in a long time was worth chancing any amount of worry she had about things. Better options weren't just going to fall into her lap as this had.
"Yeah, I've got a ton of brothers. I hope more of them are out by now, but I know for sure a couple of them are running amuck out there somewhere." She pointed out towards the sea, then shrugged. "... Most of them are probably still just causing trouble at home, though."
"I used to wish I was an only child! You're lucky!" She laughed, sticking her tongue out playfully as she shrugged. "My mom had eleven sons after me and my big bro. It was... noisy." The white fluffy peaks of her ears folded back as she regarded the sounds of her childhood with mild annoyance.
A pang of homesickness ran through her for a few moments. As her gaze met the pirate's, a hopeful thought ran through her mind. She wondered if it was a strange offer, but it wasn't like she was the type to have many chances for making friends.
"...When we both get to Notice... Maybe we could get coffee! I could even paint you, you know, as a thank you! Or.. paint something for you? ... Or something?" As she made the offer she suddenly felt better about the whole ordeal. She could at least try to make things even!
"Either way, the least I could do is get you some coffee to get youteia back for the drink, you know!" She offered insistently, obviously intending to repay the gesture.
"It's not that often that people pay enough attention to me to offer help. I appreciate it!"
Aya hadn't intended the statement to sound quite so pitiful, but she sure seemed grateful about it all.
