His distant behavior has made him somewhat cold as well, not afraid to be blunt with others when he feels he needs to be. Although he comes off as reserved and the type to keep a low profile at first, Kurai can be pretty aggressive as well, especially if things start to get violent, leading him to perform reckless actions at times. Kurai isn't an idiot though, and is actually pretty smart, especially when it comes to things regarding scavenging or the streets.
Kurai is also very ambitious. Once he has his sights set on something, he will make sure it's seen through no matter how long it takes or how difficult it may be.
Kurai is a man who closed himself off to others...but there is still a part of him deep down that once to be in the company of others, just like when he was a child. There are moments where a bit of that show, being less cold around others at times. But his desire for revenge has clouded him. Kurai has also become filled with regret, hating himself for what he has and is trying to become. Still, he tends to keep a stoic demeanor, not wanting to wear his emotions on his sleeves.
As for fighting, Kurai has become something of a bloodknight over the years of trying to get stronger, a part of him using fighting as a distraction from his self-hatred and other things. He tends to not go out looking for trouble for no reason, but he very much welcomes those who try the violent approach against him. Kurai isn't some simple-minded brute however. There may be moments where his emotions actually get the best of him, but for the most part, he is strategic, knowing when to strike as well as where. He is both skilled in using his body, especially his fists and his sledgehammer as weapons, not afraid to get underhanded when needed. Kurai has also gotten pretty decent with his devil fruit as well, using it in combination with his weapon or body to heat things up.
- History:
- A Struggling Family, A Mother's Resolve:
- Kurai was born on a small, not well-known island in the South Blue. The family consisted of himself, his older brother, Jou and their parents who were poor, barely able to keep a roof above their heads. The struggling had only gotten worse after Kurai was born and due to that, the father left his family without a word, his whereabouts unknown. With the father gone, the mother was left to struggle in order to keep her ten year old (Jou) and baby (Kurai) safe and alive. Jou helped their mother out the best he could at his age, but all he could really do was take care of Kurai when the mother couldn't.
Their mother continued to try and earn a living the legal way, but it was doing very little to help...so she had to resort to more...unethical means. The mother had resorted to becoming a thief, as well as selling her body among other things. She had became more street smart as a result, sinking so low, but all for the love of her children. She tried keeping this life from her children, but she had slowly started to rack up enemies and other unwanted attention. She had no choice but to flee this island as well along with her kids, using a small boat she had managed to steal.
The three would eventually find themselves on Centaurea, a fallen Kingdom which has been resorted to ruins. This was now their new home...but they were far from the only inhabitants on this island.
- Two Brothers:
- This island appeared to be a popular spot for scavengers and pirates. At first, the poor family of three kept a low profile, but the mother quickly adapted to her new surroundings in order to further provide for her two boys. She ended up becoming a scavenger as well, and her eldest son, Jou followed in her footsteps. Four years would pass and the now four year old Kurai would start to dive into the world of scavenging, mostly tagging along with his now fourteen year old brother. Unfortunately, things had start to get rough as their mother had come down with a terrible illness.
Kurai and Jou had to put in more effort now in order to take care of their mother...but within a few months, she succumbed to the illness, and the brother were only left with each other. Kurai was a mess while even though Jou was grieving, he still knew that he needed to take charge, using everything that his mother had taught them. It took a while, but Kurai was able to get it together thanks to Jou, and continued to follow his lead.
- Scavengers, A New Life:
- A year later, the brothers continued to fend for themselves, finding themselves at times in conflict with other scavengers and such. Fifteen year old Jou had learned how to fight and defend himself through these conflicts, using a sledgehammer as his ideal weapon, while five year old Kurai was still only getting the hang of fighting. Eventually, the brothers found themselves at odds with three other scavengers about Jou and Kurai's age. Stevie(13), Rebecca(6), and Johnny(16) were their names, Johnny being the leader of the trio.
What started out as a fist fight between Jou and Johnny ended with the two surprisingly bonding! Jou and Kurai then found themselves becoming a part of that little scavenger group, getting way more done now. Jou even found himself being just as much of a leader of this group as Johnny.
Kurai was looking up to his brother even more as things seemingly got better. Being the runt of the group has also led Kurai to try his best and improve more, really making his older brother proud.
- Desire for True Freedom:
- After a year of the group being together, growing closer, Jou, now sixteen had proposed the idea that they all should take to the seas and become more than just scavengers....He wanted them to sail freely as pirates. They all looked forward to this, especially now six year old Kurai, and the group was in agreement to follow through with this at the beginning of the new year in a few months. Within those months, the group prepared, scavenging for what they needed to be ready.
During this time, Kurai had came across a strangely shaped and colored fruit. Instead of trying to eat it, Kurai brought it back to the others who had enough knowledge to recognize it as one of the mystical Devil Fruits. Not knowing what sort of ability it might possess as well as just being all around hesitant about it, no one dared to eat it, but after enough discussion, the group was in agreement that someone should do it, and Jou was the one voted to have it which he didn't mind, but he decided to hold off on sinking his teeth into it until the time for them to set sail.
Things were going rather smoothly for the group during this time, and once the time came, they were pretty much ready.
The group managed to get a boat big enough to hold them all as well as their things and even a jolly roger designed by Jou (17). Kurai (7) had also been fully recognized as an equal within the group and not just the runt, especially in his brother's eyes which was the acceptance he wanted the most.
The group were now ready to set sail and they were just about to....until...
A ship, a much larger and fearsome ship approached the island with a jolly roger that was really well known...bringing a sense of terror and dread to those on the island who bore witness to it...
It was the symbol of the Wild Hunt Pirates...
- Two Brothers, A Shattered Dream:
- The Yonkou himself, Loha was not on that ship, but a well-known underling of his who was still making a name for himself was. Stafford Terry Pittle..."Triple Threat".
He and the other pirates aboard that ship had started raising hell on the island, stealing and causing destruction. The little ship that Jou and Kurai's group had made was destroyed, their jolly roger torn a part as well. The group was too terrified to do anything about it...except for Jou who stood up for his group, even trying to bash a few pirates' faces in with his sledgehammer...but this soon grabbed the attention of "Triple Threat".
Jou stood his ground, and there was no trace of fear in his eyes...but in the end, he was nothing but a speck compared to that man...and he was killed right in front of the group...right in front of Kurai. With tears forming, Kurai let out a scream and was about ready to lung stupidly at his brother's killer...but the remaining group managed to drag Kurai away...as well as sneak the devil fruit away.
Eventually, the pirates would leave the island, having taken a lot...including the only family Kurai had left....
- Desire for Vengeance:
- After about a week since that horrible day, the group finally built up the willpower to properly bury Jou, using his sledgehammer and what remained of his jolly roger as his tombstone. They were all taking this loss badly, but Kurai had it worse. The group stayed together after this, but things were a lot less lively, and they completely given up on their dreams of becoming pirates. They remained on that island as scavengers. As for the devil fruit, the group decided to keep it as a memento of Jou, making a pact to guard it with their lives and never consume it.
With Jou gone, Kurai lost the only person he really looked up to, barely remember the time with his mother and growing further apart from the other three scavengers despite their best efforts of trying to look out for him, especially Rebecca who throughout their time had developed feelings for Kurai, something he was completely unaware of. Kurai was so distant now, and spent a lot of time at his brother's grave or trying to get stronger. Years would pass and Kurai's pain only continued to grow...forming into anger. Kurai then found himself starting a lot of arguments and nearly fights with the other three, blaming them for Jou's death.
Around when Kurai became eighteen is when he parted ways with the other scavengers, and fully started on his own path. Kurai just couldn't move on from this...desiring nothing but to avenge his older brother...by killing the man that took him away from him.
- Whatever it takes....For Him:
- For five years, Kurai continued pushing himself to get stronger, even getting into fights with pirates and other scavengers on this island to help with it, getting himself a number of scars as a result. Kurai was just about ready to leave this island he had called home to set out on this journey...but there was something he felt he needed to do.
On the night Kurai decided to set sail, the twenty-three year old returned to his brother's grave where he ran into Rebecca who was currently paying it a visit. Rebecca was surprised to see Kurai there, but before she could say anything to him...Kurai softly apologized before knocking her out cold....and ripped his brother's sledgehammer from the grave. There was a hint of regret in Kurai's eyes both for what he just did to his brother's grave and Rebecca who other than his brother had been the most supportive of him...but he believed he did what was right by "inheriting" his late brother's weapon....but Kurai wasn't finished yet.
Kurai was now en route to where the former scavenger group resided in....to claim the devil fruit that they had swore to protect and never use. Kurai wasted no time when he arrived, catching Stevie off guard and knocking him out with the hammer. Johnny was in utter disbelief of what Kurai was doing, and asked him why. Kurai simply told Johnny that he did not deserve to be in possession of that fruit...despite that not being the whole truth.
Kurai and Johnny then fought but Kurai managed to get enough of an upper hand to swipe the devil fruit...and take a bite out of it. Kurai didn't even have time to let that disgusting taste sink in before he was tackled by Johnny who attempted to get Kurai to spit it out despite being too late. As the power of this devil fruit started to manifest within Kurai, the man prepared to punch Johnny to get him off of him...but as he did, his fist heated up, terribly burning the side of Johnny's face.
Without giving himself much thought to process this, Kurai used this opportunity to escape, eventually getting onto the little rowboat he had prepared, making his way off of the island. But before Kurai was completely gone, Johnny had managed to catch up just in time to see the escape while painfully holding his hand against the side of his burnt face. Johnny didn't say a word, having nothing but contempt and disappointment in his eyes. Kurai couldn't bare to keep eye contact with Johnny, and looked away as he continued to row...a hint of guilt forming on his features.
Still....Kurai believed that this was the only way...and nothing was going to stop him from catching his brother's killer, no matter the risks.
He needed to do this...
This was all...for Jou.
