As a small child, Sam found a strange fruit and ate it after being dared to by other children. While gagging from the awful taste, he was startled by a loud noise and fell into (and through) the White Sea. Perhaps sensing the danger his new powers activated instinctively, sprouting wings and slowing his fall. He landed in the blue sea where he promptly discovered he had lost his ability to swim. Sam was saved from drowning by the captain of a passing marine ship. With no obvious way to return the lost child home, the captain took him in and raised him. Growing up with his new family in Marineford, Sam began training at an early age to follow in his adoptive father's footsteps and join the marines. He split his time between conditioning his body and studying sailing and navigation, which he found he had a talent for and considered a necessary skill for anyone who intended to spend a prolonged period of time out at sea.
As soon as he was the proper age, he joined the marines and quickly reached the rank of Ensign. As an Ensign, he was assigned to patrol East Blue on a ship run by Captain Ralmon. Sam often clashed with Ralmon over what Sam considered to be unnecessarily cruel treatment of prisoners. After a while on the ship, Sam also began to suspect his superior officer of corruption and extorting local villages but, lacking evidence, he continues to begrudgingly serve under Ralmon.
