- History:
In the oligarchy that is the Vengari Federation of the North Blue, power is held by six merchant families known as the ADC (Almirante de Comercio), each with a city-state to preside over as the most affluent within the borders. Twelve years ago, the Tempest family used to hold this title in the city-state of Joao as the owners of largest shipping company in the country with over fifty beautifully kept ships proudly flying flags emblazoned with the Tempest family crest.
As a child, Gunner would run off to the docks constantly attempting to stow away onto one of the vessels to escape with the crew that manned them, desperately clinging to stories they’d entertained him with from giant sea monsters to islands always covered in snow. Each failure lead to a scolding worse than the last, but tales like oceans all over the world meeting in one place would make the trouble all worth it. As the youngest of four sons, traveling with deckhands seemed loads more fun than being stuffed in a room filling paperwork for his family. Growing tired of this, his father, and 14th Almirante of the Tempest family, Tempest Ruger suggested that he begin training as a shipping captain since the boy can’t sit still enough to work an office. “My time is precious and I can’t be bothered with stopping a man’s desires,” he would say. Gunner didn’t have much feelings for the man, but he could realize when a bone was being thrown his way.
So from the time he was nine until he was a little over fourteen years old, Gunner spent his time not only being educated in business, but was being trained in combat by the same men, and women that told him all those children stories. From time to time he’d be told, “You know one of these days you’re gonna have to choose between a sword or a gun, right?”, “No one can be a master at both.”, “You look like a pirate carrying so many weapons like that.” “Says you old hag,” he’d reply before being pummeled to the ground. “It doesn’t matter what I draw so long as I’m the fastest drawing it!” Gunner treasured these words that most just laughed at, but one person’s laughter seemed to come along with encouragement. A pufferfish-fishman known as Scuttle would tell him often, “The world needs more freethinkers like you kid, keep at it!”
One hot morning at the end of the summer while Gunner was fourteen, news had came that a tsunami had wrecked eight of the Tempest ships while they were at sea. The ninth ship, the Marianna, that was overseeing the large shipment and carrying Gunner’s second eldest brother, Westin, was lost never to be found again. What’s worse was the tsunami was still rampaging on track to hit Joao’s harbors. The day had hardly broken, but orders to prepare for the gargantuan wave had swiftly made its way through the low and high towns. Bustling bazaars became ghost towns by high noon. Scuttle had Gunner alongside him when the grim news was delivered from one of the deckhands evacuating. Gunner wanted to sprint to his home to his family but that was the last thing Scuttle could let the boy do. “Listen to me closely, young Gun, there’s a conspiracy at work. I’ve overheard talk of mutiny from some of the crew. They were lazy chore boys so I thought they were just mad that they had to work, but they did say something about a wave washing their problems away.”- This was my attempt at foreshadowing. Unseen forces used the tsunami as a cover for a twisted plot :
In a split second, time got slower for Gunner. Ear splitting explosions came from all over, shaking the ground underneath the two. Looking behind himself, still being held by Scuttle, they both witnessed prominent buildings in the distance, buildings that his father took him to for learning the family business were engulfed in flames, and in their backdrop stood waves as high as the lighthouse. The nightmarish scene destroyed everything in sight, flooding and demolishing houses and businesses alike. Scuttle picked up the merchant prince with far more than he thought possible of the fishman, and as Gunner wondered where could Scuttle possibly be taking him, he heard the rushing waters get close. They were not far enough from the flood waters and so in moments the two were swept up in a torrent.
It had clearly been several hours when Gunner coughed himself awake, hacking water out of his lungs as Scuttle’s familiar voice rang. “Decided to wake up, did you?” The boy was bewildered, exhausted, and most of all enraged, but these feelings meant nothing as he saw the fish men shuffle around for a second and proceeded to leave Gunner by himself. “What the hell are you doing? You’re not even gonna try and get me back home,” he said with fury as weak as he felt. The fishman came back only to bluntly tell him, “Your home is gone, young Gun. I believed mutiny might have had a hand in attempting an attack on your family but you saw what I saw. Buildings caught fire before the impact of the tsunami. I don’t know about you but to me that sounds like an attack.” Gunner thought back to studies involving rivalries his family had, “I can’t think of anybody capable of doing something big like that.” “I’m not sure either, but here’s what I need you to wake up to and realize right now!”Scuttle replied. “You’re smart enough to realize that myself and some deckhands were paid by your father to train you as your retainers. We were PAID to do that. I’m certain whoever was capable of this didn’t stop here. I kept you from heading to your home cause I’m also certain that an assault might of occurred there as well.” Gunner barked back at him, “You don’t know th-,” “I SAID WAKE UP DAMMIT”.
Gunner was dumbfounded as Scuttle continued, “We were paid to retain you, and have no obligations to stick around for further orders from a man who’s to be presumed dead. You’re safe for the moment, and that is the end of my job. Your life will seem like hell from here on out, and having a fishman along with you will only add to that. With all that in mind…I leave you here. You must use what you know to survive on your own from now on.” Gunner had a thousand questions rush his mind, but nothing to say. He was speechless as he watched Scuttle turn his back and left the boy by himself “I must do the same as well.”
Looking down at the ground, motionless with the thought that within a day and a half, he’s lost his family; his home; and what he’ll later find out, his family business. Almost everything in his body wanted to die, all but his heart. In his heart burned a fury that told him to find whomever it was behind all his sorrow. What he wanted more than anything was revenge. One thing Gunner had learned from stories told to him as a child was whenever unbridled inexplicable chaos ran amuck, the story always started with pirates.
Twelve years have passed since that very moment, and many holes have been put into pirates in the name of Gunner’s vendetta. Pirates were always the villains in the stories he was told as a child, so when he cashed in their bounty, he felt no remorse. In fact he felt that scum like that were only good for helping him get his name to the game it once held, and aid in his revenge. However every pirate he’s come face to face with has had no idea of the truth behind the events of that day, leading to Gunner having a track record of turning pirates over to the marines alive. Bodies mangled to no end, and a draw so fast and mysterious that pirates tell their marine captors about him coining the name “Swift Iron” Gunner.
Nonetheless, no one knew more than what info was released to the general public. Days after the tragic events of the Joao tsunami, news had made it across all of the Vengari Federation that on the same day that thousands have lost their homes, Tempest Ruger, 14th generation Almirante of the family has died alongside his 1st and 3rd son Smithen, and Baretta. Out of over fifty ships that sailed under the manifest of the Tempest family, every single ship sank to the bottom of the ocean. In the twelve years that followed, the biggest clue behind the Tempest family’s demise arose to prominence. By decree of the remaining members of the ADC, the Argent family had risen to the role of Almirante de Comercio of Joao with Argent Creo taking the helm of Almirante, 1st generation.
