What she came to discover was horrifying; corrupt marines were responsible for her parents death. Too young to fully comprehend what this entailed, only with a building rage to punish the marines, Dex instead took her under his wing, promising her the means to take revenge if she left her own life behind, assets and all.
With some reluctance, she agreed. "Elizabeth" was gone as far as everyone is concerned, and "Marie" came out on the other end. Dex taught her gunplay, as it turned out he's a renowned gunslinger. She acted as a sidekick to Dex's side, learning under him and from him whilst he did odd jobs, being a private detective here, playing bounty hunter there, but all of it.
When she became an adult, she parted ways with Dex, profusely thanking him for everything that he taught her, giving her the skills she needs to not only survive on the seas, but to one day go back to Loguetown and find out the truth of what truly happened, and if she got strong enough... take out the corrupt marines.
