Charles C. Maynard
Basic Character Information
Forename: Charles "Chuck/Charlie"
Middle Name/Initial: C
Surname: Maynard
Epithet: Red Beard
Birthdate: 1770
Gender: Male
Species/Tribe: Crossbreed - Human/Giant
Faction: Revolutionaries
Profession: Cook
Physical Appearance
Height: 20ft 4in
Weight: 700lbs
Hair Style: Close cropped that flows back from the hairline on his forehead. Seemingly stuck in a state of bed head freshly combed. He keeps his beard trimmed but not exactly neat.
Hair Color: Deep red, nearly scarlet.
Eye Color: Amber
Scars: Callused hands.
Gear: Coming from the previous life of a farmer, Charles wears a plain brown tunic with rough-spun, beige trousers. He uses a simple rope for a belt, tied in a large knot at the front of his waist. Weathered, leather sandals made from some of his own cattle adorn his feet. The only article of clothing that really sticks out is the red cloak his father had made for him for one of his birthdays. It was the last gift he received from his father and he treasures it dearly.
Description: Though Charles is nearly 60 years old, he appears as a man in his mid to late 20s due to his giant heritage. Aging slower than regular humans, but not quite as slow as giants, Charles is stuck somewhere in between his two lineages. Though he lacks any notable scars or markings, his hands are callused and rough from years of working the fields.
Charles is a staggering man, cresting over 20 feet in height and made of rock solid muscle. Barrel chested and with arms as thick as small trees, Charles makes for an intimidating presence. Contrary to his initial appearance however, he often has a calm, relaxed demeanor. Smile lines in the corners of each eye show this is a man quicker to laugh than rage.
The Past
Main Traits:
- Hospitable
- Jovial
- Simple
Likes:
- Wood carving
- Cooking
- Being outside
Dislikes:
- The government
- Smooth-talkers
- Cats
Unique laugh: Fwahaha
Hometown: Briss Kingdom
Personality: Charles is a simple man who, up until recently, lead a simple life. That's not to say he's dumb, but certainly leans heavier on the wisdom side than the intelligence side of things. He believes in a strong sense of hospitality to friends and strangers alike, but will not hesitate to correct those who wrong him or take advantage of his hospitality. Charles believes in simple solutions to problems, often leading to a less tactical approach, but usually an effective one all the same. He has no trust or love for politicians, merchants, or any other sort of smooth talker.
Charles takes pleasure in simple things he can work with his hands. Tilling a field in the hot noon sun brings him as much entertainment as paying for a show in town. He can often be found carving a piece of wood into various shapes or statues, which is ironically one of the few things he is careful and precise with. Though, what brings Charles the greatest amount of joy is sitting down to a freshly made meal with friends or family. He believes in the unifying power of hospitality and food; that there are few problems which can't be solved over a shared hot meal.
Though he does not take joy in it, Charles will not hesitate to kill or destroy. In the same way a farmer doesn't enjoy the culling of cattle for beef, or the destruction of chicken due to disease, he is aware of the necessity of it and will not hesitate. Though he does his best to avoid including civilians or innocents in battles, he is no saint and will proceed with his course if it means accomplishing his goal. Charles does his best to steel himself to such actions, convincing himself of their necessity and the simple fact of survival. At times though, when he believes no one else is around, he can be found mulling over past horrors often with drink and occasionally with tears.
- History:
Charles is a rarity of sorts, birthed from a giantess mother with a human father, the details of which he never had a chance to ask his father about. He was born on Elbaf in the New World, though has little recollection of the land of giants. A difficult decision was made, but for his safety, and the safety of his father, the two left Elbaf and settled in the South Blue. As a result, Charles has little memory of his mother other than some pictures and letters his father took with him. This instilled a strong desire in Charles to some day return to the land of giants and reunite with his mother, though his father warned of the dangers and potential impossibility of reaching the New World.
In Briss Kingdom, Charles and his father made a simple life for themselves as farmers. Charles' giant heritage came in handy as he was able to move more and work harder and longer than his father could, especially as the old man aged. Life was simple for a long time and Charles kept busy with the farm along with the small community he and his father had been welcomed into. Though they never left Briss Kingdom, word of Hoard Marsh's rise and fall reached them and Charles consumed the stories voraciously. He never aspired to the life of piracy, but found the stories entertaining.
Unfortunately, with the great boons of his giant heritage, so too came grave consequences. The community seemed to change rapidly around Charles, though he was still just a boy in his stage of growth. Children he played with rapidly aged into adults and went off, either leaving the local community to go to the city, or even Briss Kingdom entirely. Adults aged into elders and were buried in what felt like a matter of only a few years to Charles, even if it was actually decades. All too soon it was his father's turn and though Charles had aged through adolescence and was by all rights, technically a man, he was still a sniveling child unprepared to say goodbye to the only parent he had eve really known.
Henry S. Maynard died in December of the year 1824, just a month before the Black Fist Pirates would shake the world. His father's death sent Charles down a dark road of depression, he felt lost and unsure what to do with his life. The farm began to wither and die and he couldn't find it in himself to care. Until one day, when he stepped outside to head to town to restock food and supplies, he found dozens of fellow farmers and community members tending to his fields and animals. These people sacrificed their time and their bodies to help him, when the local and world governments didn't even know, or for that matter care, that he existed.
After the Black Fist Pirates' assault on Marineford, the world began to shift. More and more stories of new or old pirates coming out of the woodwork and setting sail were rumored across the island. The rules of Briss Kingdom, concerned with the potential inspiration of their citizens to begin their own rebellion, began seizing property and inflicting their will upon their people in various ways. They wanted to show that they were still in charge, piracy would be met with death, and that they were the ones who knew best. No part of Briss Kingdom was spared as agents for the royal family began seizing the lands of Charles' small community. He paid them little and all harvests were expected to be sent to the main city, dolled out as the king saw fit. Charles watched as his people starved, toiling away for a few coins a day. The joy was sucked out of his little hamlet and eventually, he found it impossible to continue.
He tried to entice others to leave, and some did, but most resolved to die on their land. They would not be pushed out, no matter how terrible things had become. Charles respected their wishes, though it broke his heart. He promised to return one day with an army of giants to smash the greedy king and return the land to his people. No one believed him of course, but they wished him well and thanked him all the same. Now, with his vision set for the New World and Elbaf, Charles has set sail to begin gathering the resources and strength he'll need to eventually reunite with his mother. Meanwhile, keeping an eye out for other repressed citizens of the places he travels to.
